Clinical study of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Women with Comorbidities
Abstract
Introduction
Diabetes is one of the metabolic disorders and is a multi organ chronic disease, associated with 10 years shorter life expectancy due to its associated co-morbidities and complications. In Primary health care more then 40% of the patients with diabetes will have co-morbidities, it ranges from 70 - 90 % in the literature pertaining to DM cohorts studies.DM with co-morbidities has a negative effect on quality of life and it substantially increases their health care utilization and cost. There are few studies on co-morbidity in Diabetes Mellitus, recommendations for clinical approaches insufficiently provided evidence based DM guidelines. Hence, we have conducted a cross sectional study to assess the frequency of women with co-morbidities associated with diabetes. Patients with Diabetes are more likely to develop multiple co-morbidities. Generally, older individuals, females, who are socio economically deprived are at higher risk of co-morbidities. Clinician should consider the holistic health needs of the patients and is a challenge for health systems, governments worldwide.
Methodology
This cross sectional observational study conducted in tertiary care hospital which included 96 women above the age of 30 years considering inclusion criterias, to analyse the co-morbidities associated with Diabetes.
Results
78 Patients belong to age group 41-70 years(mean age 56.6+_ 11.49).
78 Patients had co-morbidities, 18 patients without co-morbidities.
65, 14, 13, 11, patients had hypertension, NAFLD, hypothyroidism, dyslipidemia respectively.
59, 15, 2, 2 Patients had one, two, three, four co-morbidites respectively.
Conclusion
This study concluded that hypertension is the commonest co-morbidity followed by NAFLD, hypothyroidism, and dyslipidemia. As the age advances, risk of co-morbidities also increases.Prevalence of Hypothyroidism is high in females more commonly in post menopausal age group which in turn causes overweight/obesity, leading to NAFLD and dyslipidemia, all these risk factors are inter related to each other as we observed in this study.Screening of all females diabetics for co-morbidities is mandatory.
