Modulation of HPA & SAM Axes By Using A Homely Vestibuliser: To Prevent, Delay Or Cure Metabolic Syndrome In Man
Abstract
The two neuro-endocrine axes: Hypothalamic pituitary adreno-cortical(HPA) & sympathetic adreno-medullary(SAM) system control the stress reaction1-3.A literature review revealed that vestibular stimulation inhibit both HPA & SAM axes and decreases cortical level anxiety & heart rate & blood pressure4,5.Vestibular stimulation is a physiological intervention, that target different systems of the human body. The vestibular system is situated in the posterior region of the inner ear and comprises the sensory, neural pathways, vestibular nuclei & the cortical areas receiving integrated vestibular inputs [6].It networks with hypothalamic nuclei, autonomic system, dorsal & median raphe nuclei, substantianigra, hippocampal formation & controls hormone secreted from endocrine glands7. Vestibular stimulation was found to inhibit two neuroendocrine axes of stress reaction: hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axes and sympathetic adreno-medullary (SAM) systems. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) is one of the important regulators of the endocrine system. It is found to modulate autonomic activity & increase insulin secretion through vagal stimulation & sympathetic inhibition. Several studies have demonstrated the sympathetic connection between vestibular otolith organ & ANS and its contribution to the control of BP during movement and change in posture. [8] It can modulate blood pressure and heart rate by vestibular sympathetic reflex and reduce body fat by altering hypothalamic set-point for body weight through the central melanocortin system9.It encourages the reform of stressful mind, anxiety and alleviated oxidative stress.
The Need, Gap and Problem
Though it is well established that, controlled vestibular stimulation can reduce blood glucose level, regulate BP & lipid profile in man through different studies in different parts of the world, it is not consolidated and there is no translational work has been done to improve the human life. Through our work we try to foster collaboration between students, policy makers, professionals and society to create neuroscience informed solutions to complex social problems like metabolic diseases. This project aligns with Dana Foundation values.
Aim
The aim of the project is to formulate a simple, cost effective and homely physiological Intervention method to prevent, delay or cure metabolic syndrome in man.
Objectives
1.To construct suitable instrument to give controlled vestibular stimulation.
2.To estimate glucose level, lipid profile, BP and heart rate variability before and after three months of physiological interventions by vestibular stimulation.
Methodology to Be Used
Controlled vestibular stimulation will be given to patients with metabolic syndrome for three months. It is well established that controlled vestibular stimulation can control BP, Heart rate, blood sugar and lipid profile. This work will be carried out at the research centre of little flower hospital and research centre, Angamaly, Kerala, India.www.lfhospital.org
List Of Products And Tools
1.Mukkadan Vestibuliser: it is a revolving chair. It revolves clockwise & anti clock wise. It has a speed controller or regulator to control the rotation to a comfortable speed for the patients.
Outcome and Deliverable
The revolving chair has been constructed in our research centre and we named this chair as Mukkadan vestibuliser. This vestibuliser is working on a small motor and electricity. After the successful completion of the project our plan is to make the instrument in a commercial level and it will be a blessing for the diabetic, hypersensitive and hyper lipidaemic patients. Anybody can buy this chair and use it comfortably at home. The work is in progress and the result will be presented in the workshop
