Study of Nutrient Diversity in Type II Diabetes Mellitus subjects in Urban Indian Population
Abstract
Adequate nutrition is the key to healthy growth and development. Current study was conducted on 240 male and female subjects taking into consideration their nutritional intake with the help of food frequency questionnaire and 24 – hours dietary recall. Statistical analysis was done using average mean and standard deviation. Fasting glucose levels in male and female subjects was of 170.48 ± 87.89 mg/dL and 154.86 ± 74.78 mg/dL, postprandial levels were 228.74 ± 112.34 mg/dL and 198.93 ± 89.15 mg/dL respectively. Nutrient diversity corelated positively in subjects with diabetes mellitus. On comparing the dietary practices of the subjects with recent nutrition recommendations for diabetes mellitus. 50.50% of male and 46.80% of female subjects had 4 meals/day. Energy intake was relatively lower in both male (1292 ± 584.87 kcals) as well as female subjects (1035 ± 465.52 kcals). The diet largely comprised of a carbohydrate and high fat meals while protein and micronutrient intake were on the lower side. From the results we can conclude that addition of a variety of nutrients in the correct ratio will help improve glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus.
