Track: Types of Diabetes

Session Overview: At Diabetes 2025, attendees will gain in-depth knowledge about the latest advancements in diabetes research and management, including in depth knowledge about the types of diabetes and it's causes.
Type 1 Diabetes
Cause: An autoimmune condition where the body attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, leading to insulin deficiency.
Management: Insulin therapy is essential for managing blood glucose levels, along with lifestyle modifications.
Prevalence: Typically diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood though it can develop at any age.
Type 2 Diabetes
Cause: Insulin resistance, where the body does not use insulin effectively, and eventually, beta cells may fail to produce sufficient insulin.
Management: Managed through lifestyle changes (diet and exercise), oral medications, and sometimes insulin therapy.
Prevalence: More common in adults but increasingly seen in children and adolescents due to rising obesity rates.
Gestational Diabetes
Cause: Develops during pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased needs, leading to elevated blood glucose levels.
Management: Requires careful monitoring of blood sugar levels, a balanced diet, and sometimes insulin therapy.
Prevalence: Affects 2-10% of pregnancies and increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
